“Ancient Gourmet in the Silk Road” Seminar

“Ancient Gourmet in the Silk Road” Seminar organized by Maritime Silk Road Society was held on 30 April in the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library. Dr Peter Wong, PhD in Archaeology, Fudan University and Cultural Heritage Consultant, was the speaker of the seminar.

Dr Wong began his presentation with the fact that a lot of food ingredients are imported from overseas. Then he explained the domestication of animals and plants. He then introduced the history of the five grains, noodles, alcohol, sugar and herbs, the archaeology of cooking and plants, as well as the food culture of different dynasties. Dr Wong concluded his presentation with the evolution of the Chinese food culture – from the change in the quantity to the quality.

During the Q&A session, participants asked Dr Wong questions about the importing channel of the ingredients and food archaeology in Hong Kong.

Introduction of Dr Wong: Dr Peter Wong has a PhD in Archaeology at Fudan University. He has been working in cultural heritage consultancy, archaeological education and research. He is a columnist of Hong Kong Economic Journal and AM730 and is also dedicated to public archaeology propagation in Hong Kong.
