As a social science student, I always focus on some paper work including writing essays and analysing social phenomenon. Sometimes, it might found me a kind of unrealistic and detachment to the society. In order to connecting what I have learnt from classroom and what the real world has been possessing, I participate into Operation Zhang Qian – Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme 2021 offered by Maritime Silk Road Society.

On the first day of the internship programme, I went to the headquarters office for a briefing session given by the Human Resources Manager Mr. Tam. Mr. Tam is easy-going but professional. He briefed us about the establishment, development and contribution of K. Wah on that day. On the following day, he taught us some physiological and workplace skills to have the interns better-prepared to the society. Also, he kept catching up with us regarding our situation and emotion during the internship programme. To this point, I am grateful to have a close relationship with him.

Assigned to work in Tai Po Office Customer Service Centre, I was able to understand the construction material delivery process via working with my colleagues in order taking, data entry and truck dispatching. Through the six weeks of the logistic tasks, I find the importance of team work as above-mentioned three duties are correlated and need to be handled very clearly.

  1. Firstly, Customer Service Centre receive order emails sent by different sites in the previous day.
  2. Secondly, staff has to insert the comprehensive data into SAP system - Systems Applications and Products, including the components of the concrete, delivery and on-site time as well as some special requirements.
  3. Thirdly, by the end of collecting the order requirement of different sites, staff have to calculate the distance between the plant and site and the needed time for trucks to deploy sufficient trucks and conduct a detailed and reasonable distribution.
  4. Fourthly, staff who are responsible for plants and delivery have to bear a responsibility of dispatching trucks, checking the situation of plants and keeping contact with a board number of customers. It is not an easy stuff, it is a game of time that all staff has to be highly concentrated to handle different kind of situations including the hastening from site, the traffic jams and the urgent additional order asked. To a point that it would so how like a commanding centre.
  5. Fifthly, after a day of hectic work, logistic staff has to conduct reporting procedure. Based on the trucks category (owned or rented), plant (Tai Po/ Hung Shui Kiu/ Tsing Yi) and the quantity, quality and components of order, staff have to research data from SAP system, and conduct integration and analysis. Eventually, those reports would be sent to senior executive board to review the order and dispatching process.

To conclude, this internship offered me an unforgettable and meaningful journal in this summer. By participating in the working process and observation, I have improved my understanding of the construction industry and the delivery system. More than that, I have made a good try on combining my knowledge in book and my experience in work, which flourish my summer and also build a milestone in my career.
