I worked as a retail management trainee in the Thomas and Fenn Company and had chances to get involved in the back office and front store management.

Buying clothes requires a chain of process behind. There are many steps when it comes to merchandise. In retail back office, we have to first pick the beloved items from buyers. At the same time, we have to think about which items we should buy to cater for customers’ choices. Then, it comes to a long process as we have to start buying goods and ship them from different places to Vancouver. The whole processing time takes up to two months. Retail group in Fairchild works closely with Hong Kong vendors as Hong Kong serves a crucial role in exporting goods of all kinds. We have to keep up with the status from Hong Kong and respond promptly.

Fairchild owns a Chinese-style shopping mall, Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. It is a popular place for Chinese to come and buy a variety of daily necessities and products. Hence it is crucial to fulfil customers’ needs. The most important thing is language. We all have to speak fluent English, Putonghua and Cantonese. Language breaks the hurdles among people and it helps us understand customers’ needs and complete the selling process.
