My internship experience at Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel was extraordinary and unforgettable. It was my first time to work outside Hong Kong. I still vividly remember upon my arrival at the hotel, I was immediately dazzled by its grand and glamorous interiors and its golden-hued furnishings. There was a big pool in the center of this ocean-themed hotel lobby, surrounded by dolphin-shaped pillars. I spent a lot of my free time on exploring the hotel, including visits to dolphins and the greater flamingos.

Before I started to work, I attended a training session for four days. I had never expected that working as a front desk agent would be that challenging and required so much time and effort in learning how to register guests. Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel is a 5-star hotel in mainland China, thus, the instructors highlighted the importance of service excellence to customer retention. Being a front desk agent, we were subjected to constant stress and pressure but luckily, my managers were really caring as they often asked for my opinions on my job duties and were highly concerned about my needs and feelings. They also offered me good guidance when I was unfamiliar with the duties that I had been assigned to.

I am very grateful that I was able to meet new people and make like-minded friends during my internship there. As the hotel is situated in a remote area, most of the employees live in the same neighbourhood. I was well taken care of and felt very safe. Since the hotel has a 24-hour front desk service, we have to work in shifts. I had to work night shifts sometimes yet I really enjoyed the time when I grabbed late night snacks with my colleagues after work. We always shared all the moments of our day. I felt so comfortable around them even though we all came from different cities.

The internship experience has helped enhance my knowledge of the hotel industry, polish my social and problem-solving skills, and hone my ability to handle multiple tasks. Through the internship, I am now able to craft a career plan and set goals for myself. It gave me confidence when I was able to accommodate guest requests and I felt much more competent in every duty that I did. It has been an eventful five-week internship.
