On the very first day of my internship, my kind supervisor, Zachery, showed me around the office and the enormous warehouse which consists of three whole floors storing millions of products so that I could have a basic impression towards warehouse management. After this visit, one question instantly came up in my mind. Given such a large warehouse, how do you store, locate and retrieve the products effectively?

My doubts were erased gradually. I believe that a precise and effective delivery must be essential to the operation. To ensure the precision, a series of standard procedures, from picking, sorting, packing, scanning, should be well designed. In the beginning, I took part in the front line of delivery operation to explore the delivery process of garments. Questions kept popping up in my mind. How to receive the goods from the regional warehouse in mainland China? How to store the goods systematically in the distribution centre in Hong Kong then? How to manipulate a central process of the goods in the distribution centre after receiving the requests from the branches, including picking, sorting, packing quickly and effectively? The front-line experience enabled me to understand the work flow and, most importantly, to find out any potential improvement in the process flow from every single step. Therefore, it is likely to figure out and reduce unnecessary procedures and idle time, for the ultimate goal, enhancing efficiency. In addition, the exposure in the front line laid me a solid foundation for understanding the process flow in a warehouse, compared to paperwork.

Apart from my duties, my working environment was enjoyable. My supervisor constantly met with me to evaluate my work, discuss the difficulties I have encountered, and share his experience and perspective towards the industry’s development. He also arranged different tasks progressively based on my progress so that I could be exposed to other sectors of the department. For example, I was asked to evaluate the flow of a certain process and submit an improvement report to him. Apart from my supervisor, my colleagues were very nice and helpful. They were very willing to offer guidance to me whenever I encountered difficulty. It was definitely a delightful working experience!
