This summer, I worked as an intern at Emporium Suites by Chatrium. The hotel differentiates itself from its competitors for its convenient link to the Phrom Phong BTS Station. The majority of guests are Japanese, particularly from the business sector. My daily tasks range from assisting guests during check-in/check-out, handling luggage deposit or complaints.
At first, I was afraid that I might not be able to blend in the workplace. After the first day of my internship, I knew that my worries were unnecessary. My colleagues briefed me in detail concerning the operation at the front desk. Thus, I could familiarize myself with common requests of guests at ease.
Sometimes, I encountered difficulties such as language barrier – internal calls are mostly in Thai, or complicated complaints that can only be handled by superiors. However, the experience contributes greatly to build up my problem-solving skills; and I do believe that it is beneficial for preparing my career ahead.
Attitude is of utmost importance when it comes to the hotel industry. The way that employees handle guests’ requests has a direct impact on the reputation of the hotel. Diligence, for example, is one of the great qualities that employees at Emporium possess. Despite the number of guests, staff at the front office manage to fulfill the needs of every guest. Check-in/check-out is often deemed to be merely a procedure. However, employees could initiate chit-chats or harmless jokes during the process to enhance customers’ impressions. Thus, it is a vivid example of “going for the extra mile” as advocated by professors in business schools.
All in all, I have spent a great summer in Bangkok. More importantly, I have learned the essential skills to survive in a workplace. I have also enhanced my understanding towards Thai language and culture! I hereby would like to express my gratitude to MSRS & Emporium Suites by Chatrium for making this happen.
It is a summer I will never forget.
