MSRS Launches New Youth Management Trainee Programme

2019-12-19

The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) will launch a brand new project called “New Youth Management Trainee Programme” (“MT Programme”) in 2020. This new programme will provide further opportunities to Hong Kong’s youth, aged 18 to 35, to undergo a year of full-time work in Belt and Road countries as well as mainland China. MSRS held a media briefing on 19 December to announce details of the programme.

Introducing the progamme, Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS said, “MSRS launched ‘Operation Zhang Qian — Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme’ in 2016. About 300 full-time Hong Kong undergraduate students have travelled to Belt and Road countries and mainland China for 4-8 weeks of internship, where they lived and worked to broaden their experience and explore new horizons.”

“Riding on the solid foundations of ‘Operation Zhang Qian’, MSRS will launch ‘MT Programme’ in 2020 for Hong Kong’s youth to live, and work in Belt and Road countries as well as mainland China. The young trainees will undergo a year of full-time work with the prospect of becoming a regular employee afterwards,” he added.

MSRS has set up a “New Youth Management Trainee Programme Steering Committee” under its “Youth Opportunities Committee” to direct and monitor the implementation and development of the MT Programme. Ms Fu Wenjing, the President of the Hong Kong Wenchang Natives Association, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Steering Committee.

Ms Fu said, “The Hong Kong Wenchang Hometown Association, chaired by me, has always been concerned about the development of young people. For example, in 2016 and 2017, we made donation to a local primary school in Wenchang for two consecutive years to help students learning. In addition, over a hundred students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong were organized to visit Hainan to promote the exchanges between two places.”

“The programme will definitely facilitate the Belt and Road Initiative to move forward, and identify more opportunities for Hong Kong young people,” she believed.

“The sponsoring corporation or organization will pay salary to the trainee. MSRS and the sponsoring corporation or organization will cover accommodation, basic living costs, return airfare or transportation cost between Hong Kong and the training location, medical insurance and check-up cost, as well as visa fees (if applicable). Trainees are required to submit a training report upon conclusion of the training period,” she added.

To date, CLP Holdings Limited and The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited have pledged support for the MT Programme. These companies will provide three trainee positions in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia.

Eileen Burnett-Kant, Chief Human Resources Officer, CLP Holdings Ltd. said, “At CLP, we are committed to enabling Hong Kong’s young people to gain the exposure and experience of different markets and technologies that will prepare them for future leadership roles in our region and enable them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. CLP is delighted to support the MSRS’ New Youth Management Trainee Program, offering a young Hongkonger an exciting opportunity to gain valuable exposure to CLP’s operations and assets in ‘Belt and Road’ countries.

“Towngas is committed to developing young talents to unleash their potentials and make contributions to the company and society. Through supporting the ‘New Youth Management Trainee Programme’ of the Maritime Silk Road Society, we aim to provide the new generations more internship opportunities outside Hong Kong to enable them to widen their horizons and gain valuable exposure for their future development, ” Ms Kit Fan, Head of Corporate Human Resources, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited.

MSRS is actively approaching other corporations and organizations for more trainee positions in Belt and Road countries and mainland China.

Any Hong Kong permanent resident aged 18-35 who graduated from university is eligible for application to the programme. Applicants, who are shortlisted for an interview, are required to be MSRS members. Priority will be given to graduates who have completed internship under the “Operation Zhang Qian — Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme”.

Any interested applicant can apply through referrals from Hong Kong’s universities and colleges participating in “Operation Zhang Qian”, or online application on the relevant MSRS webpage.  Closing date for application is 31 January 2019.

MSRS will recommend candidates to sponsoring corporations or organizations after screening, and then sponsoring corporations or organizations will interview the candidates. Final decision on offering the MT position shall rest entirely on the sponsoring corporation or organization.
