Belt and Road Guangxi Cultural Tour

Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) has successfully organized the “Belt and Road Guangxi Cultural Tour” from 5 to 9 August 2019. In the tour, Hong Kong students visited historical places, cultural constructions and well-known enterprises in Nanning, Liuzhou, Yangshuo and Guilin to familiarise themselves with the relationship between Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as the role of Guangxi under the Belt and Road Initiative.

With Mr Roland Wong, Member of Guangxi Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice-Chair of MSRS’s Youth Opportunities Committee as the tour’s Honorable Advisor, the delegation was led by Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS.

While the Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region assisted in the logistics arrangements for visits in Nanning and Liuzhou, the Home Affairs Bureau and the Youth Development Commission provided funding support. Forty-one local university, secondary and primary students took part in the 50-people tour.

On the morning of 5 August, the tour set off from Hong Kong West Kowloon High Speed ​​Rail Station. Right after arrival in Nanning, the tour visited Guangxi University. Students attended a seminar presented by Prof. Wang Yuzhu, Executive Dean of International College, Guangxi University. In his presentation entitled “Belt and Road and Geopolitical Game”, Prof. Wang explained to students the important issues of the Belt and Road Initiative and the relationship between ASEAN and the Initiative.

On the morning of 6 August, the tour continued its journey in Nanning. Students visited the Nanning Zhongguancun Innovation Demonstration Base, China-ASEAN New Smart City Collaborative Innovation Centre, and Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Shipping Information Dispatching Centre to learn about Guangxi's latest development in innovations and technology, and shipping. In the afternoon, the tour went to the industrial town of Guangxi, Liuzhou.  The tour made a side trip to enjoy the night view of Liujiang.

On the morning of 7 August, the tour visited Liuzhou SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Company Limited in which students could walk into the manufacturing plant to get a close look at the car manufacturing process. Then they went to Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group Company Limited to learn about the steel manufacturing process. Before leaving Liuzhou, the tour visited Liu Hou Temple to pay tribute to Liu Zongyuan, the famous Tang Dynasty writer and the governor of Liuzhou.

On the morning of 8 August, students toured the Chengyang Scenic Spot in Sanjiang, Liuzhou. Students visited Yongji Bridge, Ma'an Drum Tower, Helong Bridge, etc. They could understand more about not only the unique architectural style of Chinese ethnic minorities, but also the traditional culture of these people. The tour then proceeded to Yangshuo to participate in a workshop for hands-on experience in making their own fan.

On the last day, students concluded their trip to Guangxi after visiting the Jingjiang King Residence in which they could learn about the rich history of Jingjiang Wang in the Ming Dynasty before taking the high speed train back to Hong Kong.
