Presentation on “The Netherlands – A Natural Partner in the Belt and Road Initiative”

2017-11-17

A presentation on “The Netherlands – A Natural Partner in the Belt and Road Initiative”, co-organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hong Kong and Macao, and supported by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, was held today (17 November).

The speaker was Ms Annemieke Ruigrok, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hong Kong and Macao. In her presentation, Ms Ruigrok introduced the latest developments of the Netherlands and elaborated on the country’s role in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS, delivered her welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony. She said, “Following Zheng He’s seven voyages to ‘Western Ocean’ in the Ming Dynasty and the Age of Discovery in Europe, China and the Netherlands have established a strong trade relationship since the 15th century. Hong Kong and the Netherlands continue to have much in common. Both of us are significant trading economies with strong seaports. The Netherlands is the home to Europe’s largest port – the Port of Rotterdam while Hong Kong’s container port remains one of the busiest in the world. Hong Kong and the Netherlands have enjoyed strong collaboration in shipping, finance and engineering. As is well-known, Hong Kong is also a major market for the import and re-export of baby’s powdered milk. I can see great potential for Hong Kong and the Netherlands to further deepen and broaden our trade and investment relationship as partners in China’s 21st century Maritime Silk Road.”

“Hong Kong has always played a significant role as a gateway for Dutch companies interested in the Mainland market. We can work with global partners, including Dutch companies, to open up the huge markets covered by the Belt and Road Initiative,” she added.

The seminar was held at HKUST Business School Central and was attended by around 100 guests, including representatives from the international and local business communities.
