Opportunities Arising from Greater Bay Area of China and The Belt and Road Initiative

2017-09-14

A seminar on “Greater Bay Area of China and the Belt and Road Initiative” was organized by Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) today (14 September) with Professor Bruce McKern, UTS Business School, University of Technology Sydney and MSRS Advisor as the speaker.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and Macau (AustCham Hong Kong & Macau), The Harvard University Club of Hong Kong, The NUS Alumni Hong Kong Chapter and The Stanford GSB Alumni Association (Hong Kong Chapter) are supporting organizations.

The seminar was held at the HKUST Business School Central and attended by over 100 guests, including alumni of the aforementioned alumni associations, and representatives of the international and local business communities.

In her welcoming remarks, Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS, said, “At the 5th  conference of the 12th National People’s Congress held on 5 March 2017, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang put forward a blueprint for the development of a city cluster in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The Greater Bay Area will not only drive economic development in southern China but also provide strong support for an upgraded economy in China. Certainly, it will play a vital role in successfully implementing the Belt and Road Initiative.”

“Hong Kong should formulate a shared vision of the Greater Bay Area, clarify each city’s positioning, facilitate the flow of factors of production, identify potential hindrances in the process and further engage the public in the process of development,” she added.

Mrs Ip also expressed her gratitude to Professor Bruce McKern for promptly accepting her invitation to speak on the “Greater Bay Area”.

During his presentation, Professor Mckern shared with the participants his views on China’s innovation strengths, the opportunities and challenges arising from the Belt and Road and The Greater Bay Area initiatives and how Hong Kong business could benefit.
