Seminar on “The Development of Low-Altitude Economy – Applications and Challenges “

On 14 May, the Maritime Silk Road Society organized a seminar on “The Development of Low-Altitude Economy – Applications and Challenges”, which was presented by Dr Wilton Fok, Associate Dean (Student Enrichment) of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Hong Kong.
Dr Fok noted that the low-altitude economy is an economic activity carried out by using low-altitude airspace which has gradually become a new growth point for global economic development.
Dr Fok pointed out that with policy support and promotion as well as technological progress, opportunities of the low-altitude economy are emerging. The advancement in technology has improved the performance of drones and lowered their cost. As a result, drones are widely used in logistics, agriculture, inspection and other fields, bringing convenience to life. In addition, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft provide new possibilities for urban air mobility which is expected to alleviate the pressure on ground traffic.
According to Dr Fok, the challenges of the low-altitude economy include the imperfection of infrastructure, the less application of respective laws and regulations and the instability of technology. In addition, the level of public acceptance also has to be taken into account.
In conclusion, Dr Fok said that the rise of the low-altitude economy is anticipated to create a large number of job opportunities for drone pilots/ operators, unmanned aircraft system engineers, low-altitude economic policy consultants, specially increasing the development opportunities for young people while propelling the development of economy.
