“Arabic Language and Islamic Culture Exploration” – Sharing Evening
2025-05-08
In September 2024, the Maritime Silk Road Society invited Syrian instructor Mr Ammah Saleh to conduct beginner-level Arabic language and cultural exploration sessions. The programme has now progressed to the fourth level of the beginner course, with participants starting to grasp the basics of Arabic. Eager to test their Arabic skills, the participants were delighted when instructor Ammah invited Ms. Ida, who had recently arrived in Hong Kong from Syria, to participate in an exchange and sharing session on 8 May.
Ms Ida is an English teacher in Syria with a passion for languages, music, and dance. During the session, she shared insights into her life in Syria, the linguistic and cultural aspects of the Arabic world, and her journey from Syria to Hong Kong. She even treated the audience to a performance of traditional Arabic dance. The event provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Arabic culture and Syria through cultural exchange while also practicing their newly acquired Arabic language skills.
Additionally, veteran journalist and Director of Barefoot Project Ms Susanna Cheung, as well as M. Betsy Tse and Ms Molisa Lau of Travel Theory, who joined in Ms Ida's sharing. Following the discussion, participants prepared a variety of halal dishes for everyone to enjoy, fostering a warm and lively atmosphere filled with engaging conversations.
