Presentation on “The Wonders of Peru” by Consul-General of Peru in Hong Kong

The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) organized the presentation on “The Wonders of Peru” on 6 March with Mr Enrique Carlos Cardenas Arestegui, Consul-General (CG) of Peru in Hong Kong as the speaker.
The event began with the welcoming remarks by Mrs Regina Ip, Convenor of the Executive Council, member of the Legislative Council and Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society. She said that Peru was the first Latin American country to have established formal ties with China back in the Qing Dynasty. The relationship of both countries reached new significance last year with the opening of the Port of Chancay, a joint-venture of COSCO Shipping Ports and the Peruvian company Volcan. She added that Hong Kong also has excellent relationship with Peru as both are fellow members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Moreover, in last November, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr John Lee, attended the Signing Ceremony of Hong Kong, China-Peru Free Trade Agreement in Lima aimed at spurring new business opportunities. Mrs Ip encouraged the participants to travel to South America and Peruvians to visit Hong Kong’s spectacular cityscape.
Mr Joseph Chan, Honourary Advisor of MSRS, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to CG Cardenas to show appreciation for his support of MSRS.
CG Cardenas began his presentation with Peru’s economy outlook. He pointed out that Peru and Hong Kong are like-minded economies as they are mutual members of various international economic organizations. The latest Free Trade Agreement between Peru and Hong Kong fosters Peru-Hong Kong bilateral trade. He highlighted that the newly established Chancay megaport provides Asia and South America with a 10-day shipping shortcut. Peru is one of the economically stablest Latin American countries, providing lots of business opportunities. He noted that Peruvians are no strangers to Chinese descendants, because large groups of immigrants have moved to Peru since the 19th century. The Chinese and Peruvian governments have been forming diplomatic ties since then. Chinese culture is a very important part of the Peruvian society. He concluded his presentation by introducing famous attractions and cuisines in Peru.
The event attracted a full house of participants who actively discussed various topics including travel tips and Chinese-Peru relationship with CG Cardenas.
