2024-04-26
On 26 April, Maritime Silk Road Society organized the “Journey to Egypt: Behind the Scenes of Gaza & Middle East” seminar. Ms Susanna Cheung, Veteran Journalist and Director of Barefoot Project, who visited the Gazan victims of war in Egypt to examine the humanitarian situation in Gaza in March, was the speaker.
Ms Cheung shared her experience of her trip to Egypt, to visit refugees from Gaza as well as the fleeing stories and current situation of the refugees, such as a fashion design student whose left leg was amputated due to serial gunshots, and a young Gazan mother who used to be an Arabic teacher. She pointed out that these fugitive families are now faced with issues of making a living and children education. She hopes the war will end soon so that the people can return home one day.
During the seminar, she shared a video containing veteran journalist Chris Hedges’s letter to Gazan children expressing his apologies to them since foreign journalists were not allowed to enter Gaza Strip – the closest they could reach was Rafah city. They could not do much to offer help to these children.
Finally, Ms Cheung introduced her new book which uncovers the conflictional mysteries in the Islamic world.
