Seminar on “The Belt & Road: How to Capitalize on the Online Arbitration and Mediation Platforms?”

The Maritime Silk Road Society and eBRAM International Online Dispute Centre (eBRAM) co-organized the seminar on “The Belt & Road: How to Capitalize on the Online Arbitration and Mediation Platforms?” on 8 February. The seminar was hosted by Mr Ronald Sum, JP, Vice Chairman of eBRAM and Ms Rachel So, Director of Marketing and Communications of eBRAM.

Mr Ronald Sum spoke on the “Benefits of Online Dispute Resolution and how it helps to resolve disputes effectively”. He started with the situations of international dispute resolution and arbitration in the past. Then, cited some cases he handled to explain in details the current international dispute resolution and arbitration procedures in Hong Kong. By comparing the traditional and current dispute resolution and arbitration models, the limitations of the traditional model of dispute resolution and arbitration, such as time, location and cost constraints, etc., were revealed. On the other hand, online dispute resolution and arbitration has the advantages of speeding up of process, costs reduction and information security, etc., especially during the COVID epidemic.

Ms Rachel So continued with the topic of “Introduction to eBRAM’s ODR Platforms & LawTech services”. She introduced the development of eBRAM and the dispute resolution and arbitration services it provides. By explaining what is ODR, she demonstrated the operating procedures and advantages of eBRAM’s three different ODR platforms. Then, she introduced the various functions of the platform in details, such as cost calculators, secure video conferencing systems, and the ability to apply to Chinese courts for interim measures. She also emphasized that the first legal cloud storage in Hong Kong launched by eBRAM can protect the security of documents and assist legal and dispute resolution professionals to improve efficiency.

Finally, the participants actively expressed their opinions and raised questions in the Q&A session, such as whether the Belt and Road countries recognize or allow online dispute resolution and arbitration.
