Belt & Road Webinar on "The Development of Vineyards from East to Europe"

The “Belt & Road Webinar on ‘The Development of Vineyards from East to Europe’” organized by The Maritime Silk Road Society was held on 14 April. Dr Hervé Leroux, Director of Sino Vantage Asia Ltd, university lecturer, and former Commercial Attaché in Seoul, was the speaker of the webinar.

It is notable that Asia’s interest in wine has been growing exponentially. According to statistics, importation of wine in Asia almost quadrupled in the last 20 years. Dr Leroux began his presentation with the definitions of wine, spirits, and alcohol. He introduced the history of wine and the major routes of viticulture on the Silk Road. Dr Leroux also provided some statistics regarding the evolution of worldwide wine consumption throughout the past five decades. He then explained the production of red wine, white wine and rosé. He also demonstrated the classification of some wines from major French and Italian winery regions, in terms of their grape variety, yeast, subdivision, bottle, label, logo, etc. Dr Leroux’s presentation concluded with introducing sustainable wines, such as organic wine, biodynamic wine, natural wine, and vegan wine.

In the Q&A session, participants raised questions regarding wine investment, shipment cost surge, and home storage in Hong Kong.
