Maritime Silk Road - Nanhai One Underwater Archaeology Webinar

Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) held the "Maritime Silk Road - Nanhai One Underwater Archaeology Webinar" on 23 March. Speakers were experts from the Institute of Hong Kong Underwater Archaeology Research including the Honorary Consultant, Mr Steve Chan and the Vice Chairman Mr Ting Kwok Wong. Mr Pak Long Tseung, its Chairman and Vice President of The Association of Chinese Culture of Hong Kong, co-hosted the webinar with CEO of MSRS Alex Wong.
First, Mr Tseung explained what underwater archaeology is. He began with mentioning the sunken ships found in the Maritime Silk Road. He pointed out that underwater archaeology has made a great contribution to historical research. The Nanhai One is the most valuable discovery so far, because the Nanhai One was successfully salvaged in complete vessel and preserved detailed archaeological evidence. Mr Chan was a Hong Kong diver who participated in the salvage of Nanhai One. He has participated in the training of underwater archaeologists. After twists and turns of fundraising, positioning and underwater work, Nanhai One was successfully salvaged and is now on display in the National Museum. As the saying goes, "One must have good tools in order to do a good job". Underwater archaeology requires a lot of professional equipment. The safety and efficiency of underwater archaeologists are very much depends on the diving equipment. Mr Wong shared the experience of using closed circuit rebreather (CCR) in underwater archaeological operations. In the final Q&A session, the participants actively asked questions and the speakers answered them one by one.
