Webinar: New International Perspectives of the Pandemic under the “B&R”

The online webinar on New International Perspectives of the Pandemic under the “B&R” organized by the MSRS was held on January 27. Prof George Wei, HKSYU Distinguished Professor & Head of Department , Dr Au Chi Kin, HKSYU Assistant Professor (Department of History), and Mr Joseph Lau Lecturer, PolyU HKCC served as keynote speakers on issues related to Chinese diplomacy, medical business and the development of logistics industry. Participants can learn about the significance of strengthening the coordination and cooperation among countries in addressing global issues, the impact of the epidemic on their lives, as well as China's diplomatic strategies and the current international situation.
In the webinar, Professor Wei explained the changes in the international situation in the post period of the epidemic with the theme of "The epidemic and China's diplomacy under the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’", analyzed the history of the development of Sino-US relationship, and believed that China's diplomacy would become more proactive. Professor Wei mentioned that after the epidemic, countries would rely more on China and its development in handling the epidemic, and China would also play a more important role in maintaining the interests of the countries of the "Belt and Road".
In addition, Dr Au also explained the development of medical commerce in the later stage of the epidemic with the topic of "‘Belt and Road’ - China’s establishment of medical business community in the post-epidemic period". Dr Au pointed out that China adopted a strict and "early closures" and "smart management of the pandemic" policy. Also, the economic growth of Western countries had been impacted by the epidemic while China's economic performance had relatively improved. He believed that under the principle of building a community with a shared future for mankind, emphasizing unity and cooperation, could combine the interests of one country with the common interests of all others. He also discussed issues such as the development of the Greater Bay Area, Sino-US trade disputes, and cross-border electronic payments.
In his presentation, Mr Lau explained the development of Hong Kong's logistics industry in the late stage of the epidemic with the topic of "COVID-19 - The future direction of Hong Kong’s logistics industry". He pointed out that due to the impact of the coronavirus epidemic and the related prevention policy, transportation costs in various places had significantly increased due to epidemic prevention policy issues. He believed that the logistics industry in Hong Kong could actively consider using technology, artificial intelligence and other resources to optimize the industry in the future.
The speakers also answered questions about the role of Chinese medicine in epidemic prevention, the relaunching of the transportation industry and the role of Hong Kong in the post-epidemic period.
