Webinar: Belt & Road Initiative from the UAE Perspective

2020-10-30

The Webinar: Belt & Road Initiative from the UAE Perspective, organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS), was held on 30 October. Participants learned about the history, culture and development of UAE. It was a great honor for MSRS to have experts and professionals from Hong Kong and Dubai to share information on UAE’s entrepreneurship, job opportunities, trading environment, tourism, etc. The event was attended by around 50 participants who came from different sectors.

The seminar first introduced the background of Dubai and UAE with a short video. Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS then delivered his welcoming remarks and introduced the background of MSRS. Mr Tom Hui, MBA student at Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, was the moderator.

The webinar started with the founder of Coronet Amazing Museum, Dr Aaron Shum. As one of the earliest Hong Kong entrepreneurs pioneering the Middle-East countries, Dr Shum shared his own experience on entrepreneurship, challenges encountered and physical and financial difficulties during his stay in the UAE when he was young.

On the subject of industry and trade, Mr Sanjeev Dutta, Executive Director of Commodities and Financial Services of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, talked about Dubai's trade prospects and commodity markets. Ms Alma Au Yeung, Corporate Director - Strategic Projects and Partnerships of Emaar Hospitality Group introduced the theme of Expo 2020 and how Hong Kong citizens could participate in it. Ms Michele Wong, Managing Director of MLW Consultancy, shared with the audience the efforts made by Dubai companies on sustainable development and social responsibilities.

On the topic of UAE’s tourism and culture, Ms Michelle Chen, General Manager of Hunter International Travel and Tourism focused on tourism and planning on large-scale events and MICE services. Ms Sharihan AI Mashary, Hotelier, Member of Asia Society and HFTP gave an overview on tourism and hospitality management.

This webinar was rich in content, covering a wide variety of practical information of the UAE. During the question and answer session, participants raised a number of interesting questions about this mysterious region in the Middle East. The moderator said that as a hub for the development of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the opportunities in UAE are increasing. He concluded the webinar by encouraging everyone to visit UAE, especially in the coming year when Expo 2020 is going to be held.
