Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economy Study Mission – Zhuhai and Wanshan Archipelago

2019-04-26

The Maritime Silk Road Society and Savantas Policy Institute jointly organized a Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economy Study Mission on 26 – 27 April in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The itinerary included on-site inspections at Guishan Island, Niutou Island, Wailingding Island and other notable tourist attractions in Zhuhai, allowing participants to experience the recent economic development in Zhuhai and its islands personally. Officials of the Ocean Development Experiment Zone Committee of Zhuhai Wanshan had graciously made arrangements for the visit and received the delegation in person, thereby allowing the group to understand the area's latest development in even greater depth and details.

The 20-people delegation embarked from Hong Kong via tour bus and travelled through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to Zhuhai's Xiangzhou Port. Many of our participants had the pleasure of experiencing the convenience brought by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for the first time.

The first stop on the itinerary is the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage Project Construction Site on Niutou Island, owned by the CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. Participants learnt much about the Company's past projects, including the underwater tunnels of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as well as the pre-manufactured immersed tubes for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage.

The Company's guide explained the various engineering and technical challenges the Company had overcome in its past endeavors, as well as the Company's participation in infrastructure projects abroad at countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (such as Saudi Arabia). The Company's showroom was adorned with elaborate models, detailed poster boards and certificates of excellence and recognition for the Company's achievements and hard work. The showroom was also equipped with virtual reality apparatus to allow participants to immerse themselves on the work site and in the grandiosity of the project.

The tour group then visited a number of family hostels and the Guishan Landing Ship Memorial Park on Guishan Island to get a better grasp of the latest trend of tourism industry on the Island. The decor and facilities of the hotels, combined with the soothing sea view, made a good and strong impression. The hostels had a variety of rooms for rent, ranging from twin rooms to large villas, accommodating tourists of any group size. The delegation learned that Guishan Island was not far from Hong Kong as the southern tip of Lantau Island was visible from the Island.

The tour group had lunch at Guishan Island's Haixing Holiday Hotel and tasted the local sea harvest.

The tour group then proceeded to Wailingding Island by ferry and checked in at the Acacia Ridge Resort (Xiangsiling Shanzhuang). The participants took a walk to visit the many tourist attractions on the island, such as the Xiaoshizui Beach, Lovers Road, Wentianxiang Plaza and Statue... etc. Some also took the opportunity to shop for local produce, like seaweed cakes, dried squid and dried fish... etc. Restaurants on the island allow customers to bring their own seafood for the kitchen to process and cook with a small fee. The tour group had dinner at the Resort, enjoying the delicious local delicacies while watching the sunset over the South China Sea.

On the second day, the tour group set off to the peak where they had a panoramic view of the whole island. On their way back, the group passed through a statue of Xuanwu Deity. A few delegates took the opportunity to worship, offer incense and strike the bell for good fortune.

The tour group then boarded the ferry back to Xiangzhou Port. The Ocean Development Experiment Zone Committee of Zhuhai Wanshan offered lunch for the tour group and had active discussions on the economic development of the regions.

In the afternoon, the tour group visited the landmarks of Zhuhai -- the "Sun and Moon Shells" Zhuhai Grand Theatre, the love lighthouse and post office. These spots offered a wide range of coffee, snacks, cute gifts, accessories and souvenirs.

Finally, the tour group returned to Hong Kong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, enjoying the magnificent view of the Bridge for one more time.
