MSRS Supported and Participated in Jordan Cultural Tour

Organized by Travel Theory and supported by the Maritime Silk Road Society, the “Jordan Cultural Tour” took place on 11-20 October in this Belt and Road country. Veteran journalist and columnist Ms Susanna Cheung was the docent ambassador.
The cultural exploration started off with a visit to the Amman Citadel situated on a hill in the capital overlooking the old city and concluded in the same region with a tour of the Roman Theatre, which is a 6,000-seat, 2nd-century facility.
The rich itinerary consisted of a number of interesting places and exciting events. These included a visit to the Jerash Archaeological Site and a float in the mineral-rich water in the Dead Sea. A lunch, embedding a cooking class, took place at Beit Khayat Souf, a social enterprise established by a group of women of the Souf village.
Members of the tour also waded along the river of Wadi Mujib to have a view of the bottom of the great waterfall before heading towards Petra. An important junction for silk, spice trade routes that linked China, India, and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Roma in ancient time, Petra was chosen as one of the Seven World Wonders and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site explored was Wadi Rum which is a protected desert wilderness in southern Jordan, known for its dramatic sandstone mountains, prehistoric inscriptions and carvings. It is often called the “Valley of the Moon” and was famously featured in the film Lawrence of Arabia.
From the Red Sea city Aqaba in the south, the visitors took a view towards Egypt and Israel, climbed up the Aqaba Fortress, a site bearing witness to the 1917 Arab Revolt. En route to Amman, the group passed Mount Nebo and the holy city of Madaba which is renowned for its mosaics culture.
Finally, Travel Theory arranged a session for experience sharing by two Jordanian-Palestinian youths and a courtesy call to a charity organization for Syrian refugees to enjoy a vegetarian lunch at the centre. Interactions with children and conversations with the senior inhabitants at the centre demonstrated the group's concern for the underprivileged.
