Guided Tour for HK Palace Museum’s “Wonders of Imperial Carpets” Exhibition & ”Treasure of the Mughal Court” Exhibition

On 15 August, Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) organized a guided tour for Hong Kong Palace Museum’s “Wonders of Imperial Carpets” Exhibition & “Treasure of the Mughal Court” Exhibition. The event featured Dr Peter Wong, an archaeology expert from the Hong Kong Public Archaeological Society, as docent who provided insights into the cultural and historical narratives behind the exhibits.

The exhibition " Wonders of Imperial Carpets," co-organized by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, showcased over a hundred items primarily from the Qatar museum's collection, along with works from the Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. It was divided into four sections, with the first focusing on the cultural exchanges and mutual influences between the Islamic world and China since the 7^th century. Subsequent sections delved into the Safavid, Mughal, and Ottoman empires, exploring the design and creation of carpets and other artworks from these dynasties. These illustrate how the art of China and the Islamic world has served as a source of inspiration for each other. Dr Wong explained the cultural significance of royal and intricate carpets, allowing visitors to appreciate the transmission of cross-regional knowledge and the unique charm of local characteristics.

The " Treasure of the Mughal Court " exhibition, jointly organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, featured nearly 100 items across various categories, including paintings, jewelry, architectural elements, weaponry, textiles, and ceramics. Visitors had the opportunity to admire artworks from the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK and other significant international collections. The visually stunning exhibits, along with Dr Wong’s engaging explanations, revealed fascinating stories behind each item, deepening visitors' understanding of these precious cultural heritages and providing rich historical knowledge and cultural inspiration.
