Seminar on “Carbon neutrality – a common goal?”

2022-07-04

The seminar on “Carbon neutrality – a common goal?” organized by the MSRS was held on 4 July. Ir Kenny Wong, Head of Carbon and Environmental Excellence, Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), was the speaker of the seminar.

Ir Wong first explained the definition of carbon neutrality and the problems related to global climate change. He then encouraged enterprises to trace their carbon footprint under the four major decarbonization strategies in Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 (net-zero electricity generation, energy saving & green buildings, green transport, waste reduction). He also mentioned the importance of Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) to decarbonization. He stressed that commercial and industrial buildings should make use of Energy Big Data Monitoring and Optimization. He also shared a successful case of charging Municipal Solid Waste in other region, and looked forward to Hong Kong’s enforcement of such a regulation. He then introduced HKPC’s consultation work for the government’s plastic control, including enhancing plastic shopping bag charging scheme. He ended the presentation by appealing, “We need concerted efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, especially with the help of green technology.”

During the Q&A session, the participants interactively discussed with Ir Kenny Wong topic regarding calculation of carbon footprint for the general public, incentives for SMEs to decarbonize, product packaging and sustainable energy.
