Webinar on Malaysia Cultural Exploration

2021-04-23

Webinar on Malaysia Cultural Exploration organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) was held on April 23 in both online and live mode. Associate Professor Wun Bin Wong, Deputy Dean of Institute of Chinese Studies, University Tunku Abdul Rahman, and Dr Au Chi Kin, Assistant Professor, Department of History of Hong Kong Shue Yan University, gave lectures on the history, culture and the modern development of Malaysia.

First of all, Dr Au introduced the relationship between Malaysia and Hong Kong, and discussed the cultural interaction between the two places, such as film and television culture, food culture and academic aspect. He believed that under the trend of globalization, the mass culture of the two places will inevitably interact more and have mutual influences. The continuous exchanges and contacts between the people of the two places have created new cultural exchanges, and the cultural differences between the two places will continue to decrease. He also mentioned that Professor Wang Gungwu, the advisor of the MSRS, is a Malaysian Chinese, and he has made a lot of contributions to the academic community.

Next, Professor Wong introduced the basic landscape of Malaysia, the development and the relationship of Chinese culture with the theme of "Malaysia History and the Development of Chinese Culture". He gave an outline on Malaysia's geographical information, economic development history, and early Chinese emigration to the Malay Peninsula. He also pointed out the evidence that the Chinese had immigrated to Malacca in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The oldest tombstones found in Bukit Cina in Malacca were established in 1614 and 1622 during the Ming Dynasty. There are more than 12,500 tombs in Bukit Cina in Malacca, which constituted  the largest cemetery of Chinese graves outside of China. It does not only show as a testimony of the Chinese people's centuries-old roots and hard work, it is also considered as a symbol of harmony and friendship between the people of China and Malaysia. Finally, he described the dissemination of Chinese culture in Malaysia and the development process of Chinese education in Malaysia.

In the Q&A session, the speakers answered questions about modern life in Malaysia, its role in the development of the "Belt and Road" and Malaysia's history.
