"East Meets West: Underwater Archaeology and the Ancient Maritime Trade" and Tea Gathering

2021-03-03

Maritime Silk Road Society organized a guided tour of "East Meets West: Underwater Archaeology and the Ancient Maritime Trade" and Tea Gathering for its members to visit the Hong Kong Maritime Museum on 3 March.

The term, “die Seidenstraße” (The Silk Routes), was first coined by the German geologist Ferdinand Von Richthofen in 1877. The name was given to the ancient and extensive transcontinental trade network connecting the East and the West. In the second century BCE, the imperial envoy Zhang Qian was dispatched to Central Asia during the time of the Han dynasty. The route was called Silk Road. At the same time, maritime trade starting from South China towards Central and West Asia was developed and commercial relations between the East and the West began to flourish. The "Maritime Silk Road" was established.

With the beginning of the "Maritime Silk Road", the development of trading between China, Europe and other places have influenced each other in culture, art, and religion. The heritage, discovered in Hong Kong through underwater archaeological investigations, provides testimony to the shared history and the Maritime Silk Routes travelled by the Chinese, Arab, Asian and Western traders in the past. In modern times, the "Belt and Road" initiative has extended the development of The Silk Road Economic Belt, targeting on cooperation with other countries and developing the economy, so to benefit the people of all countries.

Participants appreciated the exhibits and theme of the museum under the guidance of docents, and the tour ended with enjoying afternoon tea at Cafe8 located on the rooftop of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.
