MSRS Visit to ASTRI

2019-07-18

Upon invitation, the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) visited the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI), which is located at the Science Park. Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of MSRS, and Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS, participated in the event.

ASTRI was founded by the HKSAR Government in 2000. Its mission is to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research. To date, ASTRI has completed nearly 500 research projects, and achieved commendable results in patents and transfer of industrial technology.

The visiting group was welcomed by Mr Hugh Chow, CEO of ASTRI, and other senior executives. The first stop was the Cyber Range Laboratory, where the hosts presented the background of ASTRI and several key research areas, including blockchain technology in the financial industry and real estate industry. As its primary objective, the Cyber Range Laboratory has been working alongside Government agencies and financial institutions to develop cybersecurity measures. The group next visited the Smart City Innovation Centre for first-hand technology demonstrations. The projects included real-time processing autostereoscopic display, touchless palm authentication, AI chatbot, Internet of Vehicles, high-speed OCR, smart health care system, 5G testbed, sea, land, and air emergency communication systems, and HKT Smart Kiosk. All demonstrations have well-defined applications in the real world, and some of them have won international awards, highlighting Hong Kong’s innovation prowess on the global stage. Last but not the least, ASTRI demonstrated their retrofitted driverless vehicle. Mrs Regina Ip was invited to experience firsthand the latest mobility technology by cruising around Science Park in the driverless mode.

As one of the local driving forces in innovative technologies, ASTRI has been helping to resolve social issues such as the Electronic Road Pricing system through R&D. These efforts to enhance the living quality of the community are worthy of public support.

Mrs Regina Ip concluded, “I am very impressed by the achievements of R&D investments committed by the Hong Kong SAR Government. I wish ASTRI could make continuous efforts to make a name in the development of research and technology in the region.”
