Professor Liu Yingsheng Conducted Seminar on Silk Roads and the Belt and Road

   Professor Liu Yingsheng, Advisor of Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) and Professor of History, Nanjing University, presented a public seminar on “Inter-relationship between the Silk Roads and the Belt and Road” on 15 December. The seminar is organized by MSRS and supported by the Federation of HK Jiangsu Community Organisations. The seminar was held at Cliftons in Central and was attended by around 60 guests.

    In his welcoming remarks, Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS, said, “We would like to thank the Federation of HK Jiangsu Community Organisations for being the supporting organization of this public seminar. We are also honored to have Professor Liu Yingsheng to be our speaker and give a presentation to enhance public understanding of the ‘Belt and Road’ from the perspective of his knowledge and practical experience.”

    Mr Chau Chit, Vice-Chairman of Federation of HK Jiangsu Community Organisations expressed his warmest welcome to Professor Liu on behalf of the Federation, affiliated associations and the countrymen residing in Hong Kong. He pointed out that the Federation has been actively promoting exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and Jiangsu for the advancement of the two regions.

    During the opening ceremony, Mr Alex Wong, Mr Chau Chit and Mr CL Wang, Advisor of MSRS, jointly presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Professor Liu to thank him for his support of the Maritime Silk Road Society.

Brief Biography of Professor Liu Yingsheng

    Professor Liu Yingsheng, male, was born in 1947. He earned a MA in History from Nanjing University in 1981 and a Ph.D in History from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1985. He has been a professor and a doctoral supervisor of Nanjing University since 1988 and 1992 respectively. Professor Liu has served as the President of China Yuan Dynasty History Research Institute since 2003, Vice-President of China Mongolian History Study Institute since 1998, Director of Institute of Asian Studies of Nanjing University since 1990, and Director of the Koran Studies of Nanjing University since 2002. 
Professor Liu is a world renowned and prominent scholar who inherits from the tradition of historical and geographical studies of Northwest China in the Qing Dynasty and oriental studies in the West. He is versed in several languages, and specializes in the research on the history of Mongolia and Yuan Dynasty, continental Asia, Islamic culture in China and Sino-foreign relationships, and so forth.

    With the support of Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Foundation, Professor Liu was a Visiting Scientist at Seminar für Türkologie und Zentralasienkunde of University of Göttingen, and Orientalistik-Lehrstuhl Iranistik of University of Bamberg. 
He also conducted research at the School of Oriental and African Studies of University of London, and Institute for Advanced Study of Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. He represented China to participate in the UNESCO-organized expeditions of “the Marine Silk Road”, “the Prairie Silk Road” and “the Nomadic/Altay Road”. He was nominated as the deputy leader of the international expedition team for the Oman to Pakistan section and the team leader for the Sri Lanka to India section. Professor Liu was the guest professor of several well-known universities. He was invited to deliver keynote speeches at Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Rome, Italian Institute of Oriental Studies of University of Rome, Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Bonn, University of Munich and other well-known universities. 

    Professor Liu represented China to participate in numbers of academic meetings to report thesis. He was keynote speakers and elected as the executive chairman at several international academic conferences held in Almaty, Ulan Bator, Vienna and Fukuoka. More than 100 articles and papers were published, in which eight of them were delivered in English and German outside the Mainland. His several articles and papers were quoted in Chinese and foreign academic works. 

    Professor Liu was honoured with the first “New Scientific Star Award” by Nanjing University in 1985 and the title of “Outstanding Scholar Returning from Abroad” in 1990.
