SCMP China Conference on “Readying your business for opportunities in the Belt and Road”

2016-12-02

Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society, Chair of New People’s Party and Chair of Savantas Policy Institute’s Board of Governors, spoke at the China Conference held by the South China Morning Post on 2 December at the Conrad Hotel. The theme of the conference was “Readying your business for opportunities in the Belt and Road” which included a dialogue session featuring Mrs Regina Ip; Dr Anthony Neoh, Senior Counsel of Hong Kong Bar Association; Mr Eddie Yue, Deputy Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; and Xiangwei Wang, dialogue moderator and Editorial Advisor of the South China Morning Post.

During the dialogue session entitled “How to crystalise opportunities for Hong Kong as gateway to China’s OBOR policies”, Mrs Ip pointed out that Hong Kong is not only a gateway but also an active participant and a catalyst for the trade initiative. “We have strengths such as extensive business expertise and person-to-person networks in Asia,” she said.

On the availability of funds, Mrs Ip said that apart from the large funds being assembled as described by Dr Anthony Neoh, some Hong Kong entrepreneurs are also putting together smaller funds to invest in the Belt and Road projects. She also added that she knew of entrepreneurs in the Mainland who had bought land in Johore, Malaysia and planning to set up industrial parks and resorts there.

“The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is going the right way forward by setting up the Infrastructure Financing Facilitation Office (IFFO), thus offering an opportunity for investors to pool together their resources and to share risks,” she said.

She also told the conference participants that in order to enable Hong Kong’s younger generation to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the Belt and Road Initiative, the Maritime Silk Road Society launched its Undergraduate Summer Internship Programme in 2016 for full-time local university students to venture out of Hong Kong and broaden their horizon.
