Joint Tour on "Mare Nostrum: Roman Navy and Pompeii"
2016-06-23
In the morning of 23 June 2016, around 40 members and students of the Maritime Silk Road Society and Savantas Liberal Arts Academy joined a guided tour for the “Mare Nostrum: Roman Navy and Pompeii” exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of History. The tour aims to educate participants of the power of the Roman navy and allow them to experience the wrath of an ancient coastal disaster.
Following the lead of the guide, alongside the assistance of multimedia installations and 3D animations, the scenes of the destroyed city Pompeii vividly popped up before participants’ eyes. Relics and artifacts, including a plaster cast of the victims, refined the exhibition with a powerful message that demonstrated the fragility and resilience of human beings.
The Roman navy’s attempt to save citizens of Pompeii from the Mt. Vesuvius volcanic eruption was admirable. The tour lasted an hour. All participants left with deep impressions.
