This was my first time working in a 5-star international hotel, I was nervous at that time. Because I didn’t study anything about hospitality before, I was worried that I could not understand and adapt to the working environment. Before arrival, there were so many worries accumulated inside my mind.

Once I arrived, I was arranged to work at In-Room Dining Department of the Fullerton Hotel. At first, I thought the duty of IRD is to send food ordered by the guests only. However, I was proved I was wrong. Apart from this, there are lots of things to do while working at IRD. I need to know how to arrange table, put the correct cutleries accordingly, arrange sauces to the specific dishes (eg. Arranging dark sauce, chili sauce and ginger sauce for one chicken rice order), folding linen in different way for different uses (napkin, bread napkin, wine napkin etc), send compliment to the hotel VIP, take care of the whole swimming pool of the hotel. The most importantly, all of the locations of the hotel have to be memorised because IRD staffs need to reach every part of the hotel as long as there’s an order.

Moreover, I was further emphasised that good attitude and manner are the keys of working in a hotel. In a hotel, guests are always at the top priority. We can never say no to the guests. We must be polite to our guests, because they come to be served. Especially working at In-Room Dining, politeness is essential. Since it requires one-to-one service, we must do our best job to make the guest feel like being respected. At first, I was not natural when serving a guest, I look like a robot when talking and serving the guest. But after serving several times, I was more natural serving the guests, I even enjoyed serving later. While I was serving, I will chat with the guest, and most of the guests are really nice, so I became gradually enjoying the whole serving process.

At first, I was not adapted at the work at all. I didn’t experience all these tasks before. I made mistake. I forgot things my supervisor just taught. I broke glasses when I was in panic. Luckily, I had the best colleagues I have ever met. They are very kind to me. They are very patient. Even though I will only work for 3 months, they were still willing to teach me everything, letting me learn and experience everything. Even though I made countless mistakes, they didn’t blame me. They encouraged me not to be scared and cheered me up instead. I was really happy and lucky to meet these good colleagues during my internship. Even though the workload was tough, but everything became bearable because of my colleagues. Therefore, I will never regret coming all the way to Singapore to work in Fullerton. Instead, it is my pleasure to be given the opportunity to work here and learn so many precious things that I can never learn at school. These 3 months will become one of the most meaningful and unforgettable memories of my life. Fullerton, I will never forget you. My dearest colleagues, all the best.
