I was assigned to rotate shifts in three departments, namely Front Office, Food and Beverage, and Recreation. From clearing and setting tables to interacting with guests, numerous challenges emerged as this was the first time I was in hotel management. I tried to integrate myself by learning the core values, visions and missions of the company. To build a bond with the locals, I learnt a bit of Malay, as an ice-breaking function, for greetings, and joking with them.

Working in the hotel requires physical strength, knowledge, and above all, strong mentality and attitude. The possession of a positive state of mind affected my days there. While it is true those difficulties, like the lack of sufficient sleep and under huge stress, happened occasionally. Yet there were times of sweetness. The days working in F&B were tiring as I had to undertake an “unpopular shift” among colleagues, which was split shift (8am-11am; 6pm-11pm), mainly to assist them during their breakfast and dinner time. I was impressed that every colleague would say “happy working” before I started my job in order to encourage me. When sweetness merges with bitterness, it was incredibly motivating and rewarding to work every day. This is what I believe life is.

I had to adapt to different rules, styles and people as fast as possible in order to engage and work with them. As a result, embracing a new change is definitely crucial in this industry in order not to just survive, but thrive.
