2016-01-06

Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS), today (6 January) announced in a media tea gathering that the “Operation Zhang Qian – Student Summer Internship Programme” now accepts applications.

Mrs Ip said that the internship programme, organized by the Youth Opportunities Committee (YOC), aims to encourage university students to re-capture the ancient spirit of adventure epitomized by Zhang Qian, the pioneer of the Silk Road in the Han dynasty, and to capitalize on the developmental opportunities of “The Belt and Road Initiative”.

She said, “Local undergraduate students can apply for the various internship places through the student affairs office or career centre of their respective universities.”

“Currently, we have received offers of some 90 places from 14 companies. While we are still liaising with other corporations, I hope to secure more positions for the local students for the enhancement of knowledge and widening of horizons. It is anticipated that more names of host companies and places offered can be finalized by the end of January,” Mrs Ip added.

Mr Roland Wong, Vice-Chair (Development) of YOC, updated the media with the progress of another YOC project, the “Fujian Quanzhou – Maritime Silk Road Cultural Tour”. He said, “The tour will take place between 25 and 29 March to help students gain a better understanding of the history and culture of Fujian and the relationship between ‘The Belt and Road’ and Hong Kong’s development. Most of all, the visit to Quanzhou will enable students to experience the significance of the starting point of the ancient maritime silk road.”

Mr Wong said, “I am pleased to announce that since applications started on 28 December, we have received submissions from more than 60 students. Full-time undergraduate students who are interested in the tour are urged to visit our website for more information and fill in the online application form before the closing date on 15 January.”
