Maritime Silk Road Society and China Academy of Culture Jointly Organize the Xi’an Cultural Tour

The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS), with China Academy of Culture (CAC) as the supporting organization, led a delegation to Xi’an on 24 December (Saturday) for a four-day “Xi’an Cultural Tour”. The tour consisted of 90 delegates who were Hong Kong full-time undergraduates and secondary students, representatives of MSRS and China Academy of Culture.

The Leader of the tour is Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS and the Deputy Leader is Ms Lau Kuen, member of Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the CPPCC and Vice- Chairman of Hong Kong Volunteers Federation (HKVF).

The cultural tour aims to help local students increase their knowledge of Xi’an, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, by visiting different archaeological sites and relics and to learn more about the technological development of the city in particular the aviation development.

The delegation arrived in Xi’an in the afternoon of 24 December and proceeded directly to Han Yang Ling Museum, the mausoleum of Han Emperor Jing, the fourth emperor of the Western Han Dynasty and his Empress Wang. The large amount of pottery figurines at the museum helped the visitors better understand the concept of afterworld in Han Dynasty.

On 25 December, under the arrangement of CAC, the delegation visited the Northwest University Museum and joined a guided tour led by Professor Yue Yu, Director of  the Institute for Religious Art Research to see the Yue Yu Buddhist Art Exhibition. The group then attended a seminar entitled “Ancient Capital Xi’an and Silk Road” conducted by Associate Professor Xi Huidong from Institution of Silk Road Studies Northwest University. The seminar analyzed the importance of Xi’an in the development of Silk Road and the relics of other cultures and religions left nowadays. In the afternoon, the delegates visited the Shaanxi History Museum, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, a world heritage sites and the Great Mosque of Xi'an, the only mosque built in the Chinese-garden style.

On 26 December, the tour visited the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, Xi’an Hancheng Lake and enjoyed the Tang Dynasty music and dance show to explore the glory of Han Dynasty, background of Zhang Qian’s journey as well as the historical development of Xi’an. In addition, representatives of the delegation met with the Ms Lau Kuen and Mr William Fei Zuxi, Executive Deputy Chairman of Organization for the Promotion of Austrian-Chinese Relations for better understanding of two regions.

On 27 December, the tour concluded with a visit to Beilin Museum and AVIC Xi’an Aircraft Industry (Group) Company Ltd, a leading manufacturer and developer of military and civil aeroplane in China to see the production process of the aeroplane. The group then went to the Aircraft Museum in Xi’an Aeronautical University to keep members abreast of the latest development of the aviation industry.

Associate Professor Xi Huidong Biography:

Xi Huidong, born in Henan Province of China, Ph.D., graduated from Department of History, Peking University; visiting Fellow of Rome University  (Universita di Roma La Sapeinza) . Associate Professor with Institute of Silk Road Studies, Northwest University. Specializing in Historical Geography, especially in Cartographic History, Urban History and Silk Road Studies.
