Maritime Silk Road Society Organizes the “Nanhai No.1 - Cultural Tour”

  The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) led a delegation to Yangjiang in the Guangdong Province on 28 May (Saturday) on a two-day “Nanhai No.1 - Cultural Tour”. The tour consisted of 40 delegates, including MSRS members and representative of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations.

 

  The “Nanhai No.1 - Cultural Tour” aims to enhance the knowledge of MSRS members and members of the public on the Maritime Silk Road and the local history of Yangjiang and Kaiping. The highlight of the tour is the visit to Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum (Nanhai No.1 Museum). Delegates saw the wreckage of Nanhai No.1, a merchant vessel from Song Dynasty, and its precious Silk Road relics.

 

  The delegation arrived in Kaiping in the afternoon of 28 May and proceeded directly to Zili Village, a World Heritage Site in China. They visited Diaolou, a group of buildings with a unique blend of oriental and western architecture. The delegation also went to Chikan Old Town for sightseeing and shopping.

 

   On 29 May, under the arrangement of Mr Ding Xi Feng, Secretary of Hailing District Committee of Yangjiang City, the delegation visited the Wetland National Park of Hailing Island and a development project in Shili Yin Tan. Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society, led the delegation to the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum in Yangjiang. In the museum, delegates examined the ancient vessel Nanhai No.1, which had been buried under the sea for over 800 years. They also saw the porcelain and daily commodities from Song Dynasty salvaged from the wreckage of Nanhai No.1 and restored in the Museum. The group witnessed the ongoing archaeological work on site at Nanhai No.1.

 

To enhance communication and cooperation between Hong Kong and Yangjiang, especially under the framework of “the Belt and Road Initiative”, Mr. Chen Xiaoshan, Party Secretary of the Yangjiang Municipal Committee; Mr. Cen Guojian, Member of the Standing Committee of the Yangjiang Municipal Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department of Yangjiang Committee of Guangdong; Mr. Yang Mao, Director General, Department of the Social Work of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region arranged a luncheon with the delegation.
