Mr. Wong Kyin Pyu Gave Presentation on “the Belt and Road”

2015-11-26

On 26 November 2015, Mr. Wong Kyin Pyu, Vice-President of Maritime Silk Road Society’s Executive Committee and Chairman of Hong Kong Myanmar Overseas Chinese Association, gave a presentation on “The ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative from the Perspectives of Political Stability in Myanmar and the Importance of Developing Traditional Sino-Myanmar Relations.” His presentation was part of the “Seminar on Myanmar – Its Future and Its Role in China’s Maritime Silk Road Strategy” held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

According to Mr. Wong, China is aiming to increase its economic and strategic connectivity in Africa, Europe and Asia regions under the “Belt and Road” initiative while Myanmar is geographically important to China’s entry into the Southeast Asia region and the Indian Ocean. The Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor project and Ruili-Kyaukpyu corridor project are in progress to open new window for future cross-nation development.

Mr Wong also noted that the similarity of British colonial rule and practice in western education and financial system puts Hong Kong in a unique and advantageous position to provide linkage between China and Myanmar. In addition, the interest of Myanmar’s people in Chinese medicine and Chinese culture, including martial arts and Kung-Fu movies, provides opportunities for the two countries to strengthen relationship through Hong Kong.
