China-ASEAN Expo Representatives Visited MSRS

2018-05-10

On 10 May, Mr Wang Lei, Secretary General of China-ASEAN Expo Secretariat led a delegation to meet with Mrs Regina Ip, Co-Chair of the Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS). Mr Wang gave a brief introduction of the progress of the 15th China-ASEAN Expo and discussed with Mrs Ip the possibility of MSRS’ participation in the Expo.

According to Mr Wang, the Expo would feature such areas as co-operation in investment and tourism as well as technological and cultural exchange. He noted that since Guangxi was the second region to implement the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) to propel economic development between Hong Kong and Guangxi, significant results were achieved.

Meanwhile, Mrs Regina Ip told the meeting that MSRS and the Federation of HK Guangxi Community Organisations co-organized the Joint Business Delegation to Guangxi to visit various economic zones and industrial areas in May 2017. With an aim to enhance members’ understanding of the investment climate and emerging industries in the region, the delegation also promoted collaborations in trade and industry, finance, tourism, accounting and professional services.

Mrs Ip informed the visitors that the LegCo's Bills Committee on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (Co-location) Bill had finished scrutinising the plan. As Chairman of the Bills Committee, she anticipated that the bill would go back to the LegCo meeting for debate and hoped that it would be passed in June so that the target of commissioning the high-speed rail by the end of September this year would be met. Mrs Ip hoped that after high speed train starts running, it would be even more convenient for Hong Kong residents to visit Guangxi, thereby helping to further strengthen ties.

Mrs Ip expressed that she would actively consider the forming of a delegation for the participation in the China-ASEAN Expo scheduled for September this year. She also took the opportunity to thank the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for offering internship places for Hong Kong university students to gain work experience in Guangxi under the MSRS internship programme.
