Mr CL Wang Conducted Seminar on the Future of HK Maritime Hub

2017-03-02

Mr CL Wang, Advisor of Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) and Managing Director of Hong Kong Maritime Research Centre, conducted a public seminar on “The Outlook of Hong Kong Maritime Industry under the Belt and Road Initiative” on 2 March. The seminar was held at HKUST Business School Central and was attended by around 80 guests, including experts from the maritime industry and the academia.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Alex Wong, CEO of MSRS, said, “We are honored to have Mr CL Wang to be our speaker and give a presentation to share his insight on Hong Kong and international maritime industry from the perspective of his in-depth knowledge and practical experience.”

During the opening ceremony, Mr Alex Wong presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Mr CL Wang to thank him for his support of the Maritime Silk Road Society.

Mr Wang pointed out, “Hong Kong is the 8th largest trading economy in the world with its thriving international trade and an efficient port. Hong Kong is also the 4th largest shipping register in the world after Panama, Liberia and the Marshall Islands. However, Hong Kong appears to be losing out to other Asian ports as reflected in declining international ranking in container throughput handled recently.”

In his presentation, Mr Wang provided an overall review of challenges that Hong Kong was facing, including a weak global trade, slowdown in China’s economic growth, etc. To address questions on how Hong Kong’s maritime services sector can meet these challenges, and the shipping and logistics industries can take advantages of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, Mr Wang shared his timely suggestions and proposals from a global perspective for Hong Kong to enhance its competitiveness.
