Film Screening to Tell the Story of Xuan Zang

2016-12-10

The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) and Savantas Liberal Arts Academy (SLAA) hosted a free screening of the movie “Xuan Zang” on 10 December at The Grand Cinema for 300 guests who were mainly members of MSRS and friends and alumni of SLAA.

Featuring Huang Xiaoming as Xuan Zang and Wong Kar-wai as the art director, the movie was directed by Huo Jianqi and written by Zou Jingzhi. It was a co-production between China and India, and was selected as the Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film in the 89th  Academy Awards.

“Xuan Zang” is a historical film based on Xuan Zang's 17-year overland journey to the most remote place in “the West” during the Tang dynasty in the 7th century. Xuan Zang had to endure and overcome many hardships in search of sacred texts and the truth of Buddhism. After a difficult journey, he finally reached India. He spent most of the time there visiting temples and studying Buddhism. From Chang’an to India and vice versa, Xuan Zang brought with him bundles of Buddhist scriptures upon his return to Chang’an, and promoted Chinese culture along the route he travelled.

Speaking at the opening of the film show, Mrs Regina Ip, Co-chair of MSRS and Principal of SLAA said, “The response to the screening was overwhelming as all tickets were taken up within several hours of the announcement, demonstrating the popularity of the movie.”

She said, “I watched the movie while I was on board of a plane and was deeply impressed by the story of Xuan Zang. With perseverance and determination, Xuan Zang headed towards west to India to search for the truth of Buddhism. The audience, through reliving Xuan Zang’s adventure, could learn about the important role of the Silk Road in cultural exchange.”

She also encouraged the audience to submit articles of their feedback on the film in order to win valuable prizes. Interested persons can click on the following link for submission https://goo.gl/forms/7iJNQqYxQW21HNXV2.

To tie-in with the festive season and to enhance the enjoyment of the audience, gifts were presented to winners in a lucky draw which was officiated by Mrs Regina Ip, Mr Lee Yun-kee, Co-President of MSRS and Ms Eunice Yung and Mr Roland Wong who are the Vice-Chairs of MSRS’ Youth Opportunities Committee.
