Silk Road and Chinese Tea Culture Course (Elementary)

2016-09-06

The Silk Road and Chinese Tea Culture Course (Elementary), organized by the Maritime Silk Road Society, started on 6 September. Participants meet every Tuesdays for five consecutive weeks. Sharing a tranquil moment, they enjoy several pots of fragrant tea made by a course instructor while learning about the history and culture of the Silk Road and Chinese tea. They can also acquire basic knowledge on Chinese tea, methods of preparing Chinese tea, and ways of appreciating Chinese tea. Furthermore, they feel free to share the essence in making good tea through interaction with the instructor.

Tea has always been native to China. With its unique fragrance and mellow sweet taste, its health benefits and easy access by the masses, tea has brewed itself into Chinese history for more than 2,000 years. Over the dynasties, tea has been a part of life for people in all walks of life. Through cultural and economic exchanges with other countries and regions, tea was introduced overseas and developed into one of the most popular beverages. The ‘Tea-Horse Road’ was named after a network of land trading routes connecting China to various parts of Asia and Europe before it was overtaken by sea routes. Due to its geographical location, the ‘Tea-Horse Road’ is also known as the ‘Silk Road of the South’.
